2010 American Adventure Camp Sessions
Colonial Kids II
June 21 - June 25
Welcome back to colonial Philadelphia! There is much more to see and do as we explore life for Philadelphians in the 1700s. Campers will experience what life was like for an apprentice, such as Ben Franklin, in colonial Philadelphia. From print making to wig making, to working as a soldier and lawyer, campers will learn about trades and the Founders who did these jobs when they were young. But work wasn’t the only thing to occupy the time of these colonial kids. Campers will try their hands at everything from creating fashion trends to concocting natural remedies! Come and experience what our Founding Fathers would have experienced as kids living in colonial Philadelphia!
Do As the Romans Do!

Travel back to the time of chariot races, togas and gladiators. From the construction of the aqueducts, to the creation of mosaic masterpieces, campers will learn about ancient Rome and its influence on American democracy, architecture, and culture. Campers will learn how the Founders were influenced by the Roman Republic and what they borrowed when creating our new nation. Hear legendary stories of gods and goddesses and influential emperors who ruled Rome. Compete in our Constitution Center chariot race and join in our gladiator showdown. When in Rome, do as the Romans do!

Hail to the Chief!

The presidency: it began with George Washington and is still being defined today. Join us as we explore the history of those elected to serve as President of the United States. Campers will learn how their childhoods shaped the careers of many men who have held our nation’s highest office. We’ll also take a look at the unique responsibilities and perks that the job has to offer. So come find out which president was born on the Fourth of July, who was the first president to throw out the first pitch at a baseball game, and which president got stuck in his presidential bathtub.
Rockin’ with the Roosevelts
August 9 - August 20
Come along and explore the “Greatest Generation” in our country as we learn more about Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and their contributions to the country they loved. During this time, everyday Americans were listening to their radios, dancing the Lindy Hop, watching big-league baseball stars, and facing many challenges, too. Campers will explore the depths of the Depression and the hardships of World War II through the experiences of the average American. They will also discover how Franklin and Eleanor were “New Dealing” and “Lend-Leasing” the
country through this time. From the stories of soldiers on the battlefield, to the changing role of women on the home front, campers will learn of the important role this era played in shaping our nation today.
Growing Up American Style
August 23-Ausgust 27
From petticoats to parlor games, from tea parties to bus boycotts, campers will explore and experience what it was like to grow up in America during the Revolutionary, Civil War, Progressive, and Civil Rights eras. Campers will learn the importance of everyday chores, going to school, working in the factories, and of course, keeping clean. Campers will also see how kids played a big part in shaping our country’s history by sitting, marching or standing up for what they believed in. Through trying on clothes, making soap, racing with hoops, and listening to Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, campers will learn how life has changed for kids throughout American history.
