Dr. Randall Miller and Richard BrookhiserDR. RANDALL M. MILLER interviews RICHARD BROOKHISER about his new book, Gentleman Revolutionary:Gouverneur Morris—The Rake Who Wrote the Constitution. Of all the Founding Fathers, Gouverneur Morris ---the one-legged, philandering genius who drafted the Constitution ---- is perhaps the least known today. Drafting the Constitution at the age of 35, Morris shaped and smoothed the wording proposed by the Convention, making for clarity, simplicity, and speed. When he changed “We the people of the states” into “We the people,” he created a phrase that would ring throughout American history.
